How To Play Bog Gobbler

The goal of Bog Gobbler is to score points by finding words that can be made from adjacent letters in a grid. You can play a solo game or against one or more opponents as individuals or teams.

At the start of the game all letters in the grid are unowned (indicated by grey background). For your first turn you can form any possible word from unowned letters. On subsequent turns you must use at least one letter that you already own in the word you make. (Exception: if you made a 7-letter word or longer on your previous turn you may again "hop" to a new location on the board and make a word from unowned letters. This is typically more useful on larger grids such as 10x10 or larger.)

Example Grid

From the Example Grid some examples of words that may be played on the first turn are PEW, BOOT, DOLE, JADE (and many more). Each letter in the word must be connected to the previous letter horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

After you play a word you become the owner of all tiles used to make that word, indicated by the background colour of the tiles changing to your colour. After your first turn you must use at least one letter you already own in your new words. If you own the letters shown in red in the Example Grid some examples of words you can play are:
DATA (illustrated by the blue line), JAB, BAD, TWEE
You cannot play: DOLE, TEEN, BOW, etc., but you may be able to play them later as you acquire more tiles.

In a multiplayer game ownership of each tile may be transferred between players many times as words are played. If any player or team loses possession of all its letters that player or team is eliminated (unless someone on the team has not played yet or has just played a 7-letter word and can therefore hop to a new location). Any given word may only be played once in the game by any player, even if it appears in multiple locations in the grid.

How to Play a Word

Mouse or Touchscreen

Click or touch the first letter of the word and drag to each letter of the word in turn until you reach the final letter, then release the mouse click or touch. A blue line will indicate what letters you have dragged over so far.

Shortcut to play variations of words: If you can make another word by adding a single letter to the word you just played, simply click or tap that letter. Example: To play RING and then RINGS, drag out the word RING and then click/tap the S. If you can make another shorter word from the word you just played, simply click or tap the final letter of the shorter word. Example: To play TUNED, TUNE, and TUN, drag out TUNED, then click/tap the E, then click/tap the N.

Keyboard

Type the word you wish to play in the Play text field. Blue lines on the grid will indicate possible locations where this word can be played. If there is more than one possible location use the space bar to switch locations until the one you want is indicated. Press Enter or Return to play the word.

Shortcut to play variations of words: If you can make another word by adding a single letter to the word you just played, use the slash key and then type that letter. Example: To play RING and then RINGS, type RING[Enter]/S[Enter]. If you can make another shorter word from the word you just played, use the Backspace key. Example: To play TONED, TONE, and TON, type TONED[Enter][Backspace][Enter][Backspace][Enter].

Scoring

You get points for each letter in each word you make. Common letters are worth 1 point and uncommon letters are worth up to 10 points ('Qu' is considered to be a single letter worth 10 points for scoring purposes.) Additionally the value of the word is multiplied by a bonus multiplier depending on the length of the word:
• 3-letter words: x 1
• 4-letter words: x 2
• 5-letter words: x 3
• 6-letter words: x 4
• 7-letter words: x 5
• 8-letter words: x 6
and so on.

Different Ways to Play Bog Gobbler

Solo

This is the most basic way to play Bog Gobbler, playing by yourself with a board size and time limit of your choice. Try to maximize your score or find interesting words, it's up to you. It's the default way to play Bog Gobbler if you go here and press Start Game.

Daily Challenge

This is also a solo game. Everyone gets the same board each day and can compare how they do with everyone else, or their friends on their personal leaderboard. The cumulative leaders are tracked weekly and monthly. After you've played for a few weeks you will appear on the trend chart. Try the daily challenge here.

Multi-Player

By sending a join link or game code to a friend you can play on the same board at the same time, competing for points and ownership of territory on the board. Up to 12 players can play in a single game, as individuals or as part of teams.

Shared Boards

If you want to compare yourself to a friend but not in a live game, you can share your solo game result with them and they can play the same board. After they do you will be able to compare your results.

Theme Boards

A theme board contains a list of words that all correspond to a theme. The goal is to find as many of these words as possible, not necessarily trying to score points. Try some theme boards here.

Sprint Mode

In sprint mode the board is 60 squares wide and 8 squares tall. Only an 8x8 section appears on the screen at once. Your goal is to work your way from left to right as fast as possible, not necessarily scoring points. The first word you play must have one of its letters in the leftmost column. After that connect letters you already own to new words to move to the right as fast as possible. Try sprint mode.

Offline Mode

If you have added Bog Gobbler to your Home Screen you can play a solo game even without an Internet connection.
